Electric fence security systems

Living in Kenya does mean one has to consider numerous security options to keep your family, property & belongings safe & secure.  One should definitely consider installing an electric fence, as it offers your home the first level of defence by providing perimeter security.  Just in their very high voltage shock, an electric fence will deters intruders.  You can maximise on your perimeter electric fence by having it linked to your house alarm, which should be linked to an alarm quick response company.  Any tampering with the electric fence wires will set off your house alarm & inform your alarm quick response company (and also you, if you have Instarect’s GSM System) to a potential threat to your security.

The Technical Stuff!

The heart of an electric fence system is the energiser (power unit).  The electric fence energizer is a necessity.  The electric fence energiser converts mains or battery power (240 volts AC or 12 volts DC) into a high voltage pulse (non-lethal shock). This box is filled with capacitors that store this charge. It also controls it’s movement down the wires, every +-1.5 seconds.

Important note – Energisers have a low energy consumption and you will not see any noticeable increase on your electricity bill.

If you are using a battery as your main power source, keep in mind that the battery will need to be replaced every 2-3 years and you will need a system to charge the battery.  Also, keep in mind that as the battery loses charge, so does your electric fence. The higher the battery voltage, the higher the Energiser output pulse. It is a lot more convenient to run off mains electricity if it is available.

For an electric shock to occur, the current must complete a full circuit (see diagram below).  When a grounded person touches the live wires of the fence, or touches the earth & live wire simultaneously, the electric fence circuit is complete. Electricity flows through the body & back through the ground to the earth, or down the earth wire, to the return terminal of the energizer.  It is at this point that a person receives a shock from the electric fence and hopefully has experienced enough discomfort to lose interest in trying to climb over your wall!

Discharge of current from the live terminal of an energizer is about 9000 volts. Not all of this current actually ends up on the fence.  This is known as voltage leaking. Electric fence manufacturers state that there are numerous scenarios that could determine how many volts actually end up running through the wires:

These include:

  • The condition of the wiring and connections
  • The type & quality of fencing wire you are using
  • How well the live wire is insulated
  • An effective earth system is essential
  • Poor vegetation control, allowing vegetation to touch the wires
  • Live wires touching grounded objects.

An electric fence will only work efficiently if the energizer & earth wires are earthed effectively.  Instarect has seen unearthed electrical fence installations by the many inexperienced installers. These fences are of very little genuine deterent.
